Mercedes-AMG GLC 53: six cylinders return to the game
Mercedes reintroduces a high-performance six-cylinder engine for the AMG GLC 53, enhancing its performance and image after dropping the V8 option.
Mercedes is revitalizing the AMG brand's reputation by reintroducing a powerful six-cylinder engine into the AMG GLC 53 model, following the discontinuation of one of the most iconic V8 engines. The GLC 53 features a newly upgraded turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine known as 'M256M', which has had its torque increased to 600 Nm—41 Nm more than the previous CLE 53 model. This upgrade also includes an overboost function that temporarily raises the torque to 640 Nm for 10 seconds, showcasing AMG's commitment to performance.
In addition to the engine enhancements, the AMG GLC 53 will be available in a Coupé variant, offering a more stylish option for buyers prioritizing aesthetics. Both the standard and Coupé versions boast impressive acceleration, achieving 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h, assuming the buyer opts for the AMG Dynamic Plus package. This focus on performance and style indicates Mercedes' strategy to appeal to a market that values both power and design in high-performance vehicles.
The return of the six-cylinder engine signifies a shift in the automotive landscape, where manufacturers are increasingly focusing on tuning smaller, high-output engines rather than relying solely on larger V8 options. For Mercedes, this move is critical for reinforcing the AMG brand’s identity and performance legacy in a competitive market, while also aligning with broader industry trends towards efficiency and regulatory compliance in vehicle emissions.
