Armed man arrested as he ran towards the Congress
An 18-year-old man was arrested by police in Washington after running towards the Capitol building with a loaded shotgun.
On Tuesday, police in Washington apprehended an 18-year-old man armed with a loaded shotgun as he sprinted towards the Capitol building. The individual, identified as coming from Georgia, had parked a Mercedes SUV and made his way for several hundred meters towards the Congress before law enforcement intervened. The Police Chief, Michael Sullivan, indicated that the suspect was dressed in a tactical vest and gloves, and had a Kevlar helmet and gas mask in his vehicle at the time of the arrest.
During a press conference, Sullivan emphasized the importance of police presence in the area, stating that the potential consequences could have been dire had officers not been on-site. The situation highlights the ongoing concerns about security in and around the Capitol. Additionally, he revealed that the police have been practicing responses to active shooter scenarios in that vicinity in recent months, suggesting heightened awareness and preparedness amidst public concerns over potential violent incidents.
The suspect, whose vehicle was not registered under his name, has no prior known history with the police, and he was found to lack a license for the firearm.
