President of Peru dismissed. He concealed a meeting with Chinese businessmen

The Peruvian parliament has dismissed President José Jerí amid an investigation into undisclosed meetings with Chinese entrepreneurs, just two months before upcoming elections.

On Tuesday, the Peruvian parliament voted to remove President José Jerí amid ongoing investigations into his undisclosed meetings with two Chinese businessmen. This decision comes at a critical time, as the country approaches parliamentary and presidential elections in just two months. With the Congress set to begin the process of electing a new president on Wednesday, this sudden change in leadership marks a significant moment in Peru's political landscape.

Jerí becomes the seventh president to be ousted in a decade, highlighting the political instability that has plagued the nation. He ascended to the presidency in October last year after the removal of former president Dina Boluarte, who herself had been vice president under Pedro Castillo, who was also ousted in 2022. The frequent changes in leadership raise concerns about governance and public trust in Peru's political institutions.

The dismissal process required a majority of votes from the unicameral Congress, which consists of 130 lawmakers. A total of 75 legislators voted in favor of Jerí's removal, with 24 against and three abstentions. This demonstrates a clear majority support for the decision, and as a result, the parliament must now elect a new president from among its members, leading to potential shifts in policy direction and governance in the near future.
