Ukrainian 11-year-old boy honoured with Cinema for Peace award in Berlin
An 11-year-old Ukrainian boy, Roman Oleksiv, was awarded at the Cinema for Peace event in Berlin for his role in a documentary detailing his recovery from a Russian missile attack.
Roman Oleksiv, an 11-year-old from Vinnytsia, Ukraine, has received recognition at the Berlin International Film Festival, where he was honored with the Cinema for Peace Honorary Dove 2026. This award was given due to his compelling portrayal in the documentary 'Children in the Fire,' directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, which chronicles his harrowing experience following a devastating missile strike that targeted his hometown in July 2022.
The documentary sheds light on Roman's tragic narrative, which includes the loss of his mother during the airstrike, his severe injuries, and the grueling road to recovery that involved numerous surgeries and rehabilitation abroad. Now back in school, Roman has not only resumed his music lessons but also embarked on public speaking engagements, where he shares his inspiring story of resilience and hope amidst the backdrop of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
'Children in the Fire' was prominent at the Cinema for Peace event, being shortlisted for the Most Valuable Documentary Film of the Year alongside other significant works, including '2000 Meters to Andriivka' by Ukrainian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov. This film's recognition at such a prestigious festival highlights the poignant narratives emerging from the tragic realities of war and the artists bringing these stories to light, fostering greater awareness and empathy on an international stage.
