A trailer carrying hundreds of pigs caught fire in Kauhajoki - traffic blocked on Kauhajärventie
A trailer transporting about 325 pigs caught fire in Kauhajoki, leading to a traffic blockage, with firefighters managing to contain the blaze just in time.
On Tuesday afternoon, around five o'clock, a trailer carrying approximately 325 pigs caught fire in Kauhajoki, specifically on Kauhajärventie. The fire department quickly responded, and according to fire chief Jani Välimaa, the blaze was extinguished just in time to prevent a larger disaster. Firefighters implemented a ventilation strategy to aid in the extinguishing efforts, which helped to maintain the pigs' living conditions under the circumstances.
Veterinarians were on location to ensure the welfare of the animals, examining the pigs before they were to be transferred to an alternate transport vehicle. As some of the pigs were unfortunately found to have been severely affected, a few had to be euthanized, and further assessments would be made during their transfer to determine if more needed to be put down. The fire was determined to be caused by a tire fire, likely originating from a bearing fault.
The fire incident not only caused distress for the animals involved but also led to significant traffic disruptions in the area, with seven fire units responding to manage the situation safely. The event highlights the importance of immediate firefighting response and the need for stringent safety practices in animal transportation to prevent such occurrences in the future.
