‘Shame on’ Swiss commentator who made remarks about Israeli athlete, head of Israeli Olympic bobsleigh says

The president of the Israeli Olympic Bobsleigh Federation criticized a Swiss commentator who made offensive remarks about an Israeli athlete during the Olympics.

During the Olympics, AJ Edelman, an Israeli-American bobsleigher, faced derogatory comments from Swiss commentator Stefan Renna, who accused him of being 'in favour of genocide in Gaza.' David Greaves, the president of the Israeli Olympic Bobsleigh Skeleton Federation, vehemently condemned Renna's statements, calling him a 'bully', and expressed pride in how Israeli athletes represent their country with integrity.

Greaves underscored the significance of the Israeli flag being flown at the Games, emphasizing the pride and sense of belonging it gives to the Jewish people. In his remarks, he highlighted the exceptional conduct of Israeli athletes, referring to them as 'mensches' – a term that denotes integrity and honor, and suggested that the commentator should learn from their example.

The incident sheds light on the ongoing tensions surrounding Israel and its representation in international sports. Renna's comments have sparked outrage within the Jewish community and among supporters of Israeli athletes, who see such remarks as reflective of broader prejudices and the challenges faced by athletes representing Israel on an international stage.
