The U.S. has successfully transported a mini nuclear reactor from California to Utah, marking a significant step in the rapid deployment of nuclear energy for military and civilian purposes.

In a historic first, the U.S. Departments of Energy and Defense have transported a mini nuclear reactor aboard a military cargo plane from California to Utah, demonstrating the feasibility of quickly deploying nuclear power for both military and civilian applications. The reactor, measuring roughly the size of a small bus, was flown by a C-17 Globemaster III from March Air Reserve Base in California to Hill Air Force Base in Utah, covering approximately 500 miles. This transport is a crucial step towards enabling flexible and rapid nuclear energy solutions, which may reshape energy production methodologies in the U.S.

This mini reactor, known as the WaRD 250 and produced by California-based Valar Atomics, is designed to generate up to 5 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power around 5,000 homes. It will initially operate at a capacity of 100 kilowatts in July, with a gradual increase to its full capacity of 250 kilowatts later in the year.
