Widow and sister accused of kidnapping and murdering the owner of a notary office go to trial

A widow and her sister are set to stand trial for the kidnapping and murder of a notary office owner in central Goiás, Brazil, more than four years after the crime occurred.

Over four years after the shocking crime, Alyssa Martins de Carvalho Chaves and her sister Aleyna Martins De Carvalho are finally facing a jury trial for the kidnapping and murder of Luiz Fernando Alves Chaves, a 40-year-old notary public in Rubiataba, Goiás. The trial is scheduled for March 26, as determined by Judge Yvan Santana Ferreira, amidst serious allegations from the Goiás Public Ministry accusing both women of qualified homicide.

The circumstances of the crime are harrowing; Luiz Fernando was kidnapped on the night of December 28, 2021, and subsequently murdered. Reports indicate that two men who actively participated in this execution confessed to the police, revealing that they had been promised R$ 5,000 and Luiz’s truck in exchange for their involvement. The nature of the crime, as well as the familial ties between the accused and the victim, raises significant questions about motives and premeditation, which will be at the forefront of the trial.

Alyssa's defense attorney, Auro Jayme, has publicly expressed confidence in the jury system, stating that all evidence supporting Alyssa's innocence will be presented and proven in court. However, Aleyna's defense has not offered any comments up to the publication of this report. This trial is not just a legal proceeding; it reflects broader concerns about violence and familial relations in Brazil, making it a pivotal case to follow in the region's ongoing fight against crime and injustice.
