The sons of an oligarch close to Lukashenko have had Lithuanian citizenship for several years
The investigation revealed that two sons of oligarch Yuri Chizh, close to Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, held Lithuanian citizenship for twelve years before renouncing it last year.
An investigative report has disclosed that the sons of Yuri Chizh, an oligarch with strong ties to Belarus' authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko, held Lithuanian citizenship for twelve years before surrendering it in 2022. The inquiry, conducted in collaboration with the independent Belarusian investigative media outlet "Bureau" by Lithuania's journalism investigative center "Siena," highlights the discrepancy of granting citizenship to individuals on the sanctions list by the European Union. The Chizh brothers, Uladzimir and Sjarhej, were granted citizenship due to their maternal grandmother's heritage, as she was a citizen of the Republic of Lithuania before World War II. This legal basis allowed them to retain dual citizenship while holding Lithuanian nationality.
