Neo-judge Zaradkiewicz and former deputy of Ziobro running for the renewed KRS

The latest candidate list for Poland's renewed National Council of the Judiciary features controversial neo-judges and former government officials tied to the ruling party.

In Poland, the third list of candidates vying for the renewed National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) has been revealed, highlighting individuals rapidly promoted during the Law and Justice party's (PiS) time in power. Among those on the list are two neo-judges of the Supreme Court, a former Deputy Minister of Justice, and a deputy head of the illegally formed neo-KRS. All candidates project themselves as 'civil candidates,' attempting to gather public signatures in support of their candidacies, despite their controversial backgrounds.

This candidate list was announced on February 16, 2026, and includes significant individuals like Dagmara Pawełczyk-Woicka, the current chair of the illegal neo-KRS, and a close associate of Zbigniew Ziobro, the former Minister of Justice. However, Pawełczyk-Woicka herself is not running due to a statutory limit that prevents serving members from exceeding two terms on the KRS. As a result, many current members of the neo-KRS, including Maciej Nawacki, find themselves ineligible for re-election.

The candidacies raise concerns about the integrity of the judicial system in Poland, as these individuals have benefitted from the reforms instituted by Ziobro, which critics argue were aimed at undermining judicial independence. The presentation of these candidates as 'citizen candidates' appears to be a strategic move, as their affiliations with the current government suggest a continuation of the politicization of the judiciary rather than a genuine representation of public interests.
