The 28th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will showcase 57 Greek documentaries from March 5 to 15, highlighting personal narratives and social issues.
The 28th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival is set to take place from March 5 to 15, featuring 57 Greek documentaries across various competitive sections. These documentaries are notable for their powerful storytelling, drawing from personal narratives that reflect the social upheavals of contemporary Greece. The competition includes three main categories: International Competition, Newcomers, and Film Forward, alongside specialized screenings and the Open Horizons section.
In addition to the awards presented by the festival itself, which aims to acknowledge excellence in documentary filmmaking, the event will also support independent prizes that further promote Greek cinema. This year marks the introduction of a new award financed by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, which offers a cash prize of 5,000 euros, signaling a collaborative effort to foster local talent and encourage the production of impactful documentaries.
This yearβs festival is notable not just for its array of films but also for its hybrid approach, showcasing the documentaries in physical venues while also providing online access. Such an approach allows for a wider audience engagement and reflects the festival's ongoing commitment to adapt to contemporary viewing habits, ensuring that significant social issues portrayed through these films reach a broad demographic in Greece and beyond.
