OPEKA: Numerous Violations - 'Shadows' with the Provision of Benefits
A systemic audit by the National Transparency Authority revealed numerous violations in benefit payments amounting to 1.86 million euros at OPEKA.
A comprehensive audit conducted by the National Transparency Authority (ΕΔΑ) has uncovered several violations at the Organization for Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity (ΟΠΕΚΑ), leading to a staggering 1.86 million euros in improperly disbursed funds. This audit, covering the period from January 10, 2020, to December 31, 2022, specifically focused on the legality of granting Social Solidarity benefits, revealing serious breaches in the application and approval processes.
The audit scrutinized 372 files concerning benefit applications, uncovering significant inconsistencies. Notably, it was found that the established procedures for submitting applications and processing them in chronological order were not adhered to. Additionally, applications were approved despite missing documentation or failure to meet specific criteria, such as age limits for eligibility. Moreover, benefits were reportedly disbursed earlier than warranted, resulting in applicants receiving funds for longer durations than they were entitled to, raising concerns over due diligence and regulatory compliance.
The implications of these findings are profound, as they not only highlight systemic flaws within OPEKA's operational protocols but also underscore the need for stricter oversight and accountability in the distribution of social welfare benefits. Given the significant amount of errors identified, this could lead to a re-evaluation of current policies governing social benefits in Greece, as well as increased scrutiny from both governmental and public stakeholders to restore confidence in the welfare system.
