No 'Stranamore' on Rai. The rights remain with Mediaset

The historic format 'Stranamore' will not return to Rai, as its rights are owned by Mediaset, while Rai plans to revive another classic show, 'Canzonissima.'

The beloved format 'Stranamore', known for being hosted by the late Alberto Castagna and later by Emanuela Folliero during the 1990s and 2000s, will not be revived on Rai television. This decision comes amid reports confirming that the rights to the show are currently held by Mediaset, which prevents Rai from reintroducing the series. Previous speculation regarding a possible return of 'Il gioco delle coppie', another popular show from the 1980s hosted by Marco Predolin, has also been dismissed, indicating a clear shift in programming strategy for the public broadcaster.

Despite the absence of 'Stranamore', Rai has confirmed the highly anticipated return of 'Canzonissima', a variety show that originally aired from 1956 to 1975. The new edition will be hosted by Milly Carlucci, who has recently enjoyed success with 'Ballando con le stelle.' This revival marks a significant cultural moment as 'Canzonissima' will return to the air after a fifty-year hiatus, exciting many fans of traditional Italian entertainment.

Although an official premiere date for 'Canzonissima' has not yet been released, reports suggest it is slated for late March 2024. The return of this classic show, along with the ongoing shift in programming at Rai, reflects a larger trend in Italian television where networks are seeking to attract viewers with nostalgic content that harkens back to Italy's rich entertainment history, despite the loss of rights to some classic formats.
