Lassa fever kills one, infects two in Kano — Official

A Lassa fever outbreak in Kano, Nigeria, has resulted in one death and two additional infections, according to the Kano Centre for Disease Control.

The Kano Centre for Disease Control has reported a Lassa fever outbreak in the state that has claimed the life of one individual, identified as a staff member of Médecins Sans Frontières. The organization’s Director-General, Mohammed Adamu, provided details during a press briefing, revealing that the deceased had succumbed to complications of the disease. Two others—a doctor and a woman—have contracted the virus after being in contact with the initial victim.

The outbreak's index case pertains to a French national who developed Lassa fever symptoms roughly a week after arriving in Nigeria. Adamu explained that she had visited a hospital but, after a few days, her condition worsened, leading to the discovery of more cases linked to her. Health officials have managed to bring the situation under control following the initial outbreak but are on alert for further cases.

The emergence of Lassa fever in Nigeria underscores the ongoing public health challenges in the region, especially relating to viral hemorrhagic fevers. Public health authorities are likely to intensify monitoring and response efforts in Kano and other vulnerable areas to prevent further spread and ensure safety in medical settings where such cases arise.
