India: Generic versions of Ozempic and Wegony Coming – They Will Be 60% Cheaper
An Indian pharmaceutical company is set to launch generic versions of obesity drugs Ozempic and Wegony at significantly reduced prices in India.
The Indian pharmaceutical company Dr Reddy’s is preparing to market a generic version of Wegony, a popular drug developed by Nordisk for combating obesity, at a price that is expected to be 60% lower than the original product. This announcement was made by the company’s CEO, J.B. Prasad, during a discussion with Reuters.
Last month, Dr Reddy’s received regulatory approval in India to manufacture and sell a generic version of Ozempic, another obesity treatment. The company is optimistic about receiving similar approval for Wegony in the near future, thus expanding its portfolio of obesity medications. This move is expected to make these essential drugs more accessible to the public, particularly in a country where obesity has become a growing health concern.
By introducing these affordable generic medications, Dr Reddy’s is poised to impact the landscape of obesity treatment in India, potentially leading to increased competition among pharmaceutical firms. This could further enhance the availability of cost-effective treatment options for patients struggling with obesity and related health issues, making a significant contribution to public health in the region.
