Anomalies of the Last Winter Month: The First Half is Much Colder, and the Future Outlook Becomes Clearer

The first half of February in Lithuania has seen significantly colder temperatures compared to historical averages, with Vilnius recording -9.5 °C and Klaipėda -9.1 °C.

In Lithuania, the weather conditions during the first half of February 2023 have been marked by unusually low temperatures, with average readings in Vilnius at -9.5 °C and Klaipėda at -9.1 °C, significantly below the historical averages for this period. Notably, 13 out of the first 16 days in Vilnius, and all 16 days in Klaipėda, were colder than the averages recorded from 1991 to 2020. The coldest days were observed from February 1-4, 9-10, and 15-16, while relatively warmer days were noted on February 6-7 and 12-13, indicating significant temperature fluctuations within the month.

In terms of precipitation, the first half of February has been drier than usual, with Lithuania achieving only about 40% of the expected monthly norm (around 17 mm) thus far. There are considerable variations in rainfall levels across different regions of Lithuania, ranging up to four times between the driest and wettest areas. For instance, Vilnius (Trakų Vokė) received 10.7 mm of precipitation, which is 25% of its monthly norm of 42 mm, while Klaipėda recorded 13.5 mm, corresponding to 30% of its monthly norm of 45 mm.

Looking ahead, the analysis suggests that the temperature trends will continue to fluctuate throughout the remainder of February, with expectations for both colder and slightly warmer periods, as the weather in Lithuania adapts to the seasonal transitions. These projections are crucial for understanding the potential impacts on local agriculture, energy demands, and public health during this period of climatic variability.
