Dispute over access road for the Supreme Court
A legal dispute has arisen regarding the access road to the Icelandic Supreme Court, initiated by landowners in Bláskógarbyggð.
Landowners of summer cottage plots near Stóra-Laxá in Bláskógarbyggð have obtained permission from the Icelandic Supreme Court to appeal a ruling by the Landsréttur regarding an access road leading from Skálholtsvegur to Hvítá. The heart of the dispute centers on the landowners' demand to overturn a decision made by the district commissioner in Suðurland, which relates to the rights of fishing tenants to access private areas by vehicle. According to a recent Supreme Court ruling published this past Thursday, it has been determined that action must be taken against Finn Harðarson, a tenant with fishing rights in the area, prohibiting him from driving motor vehicles on the private roads owned by the landowners, Iðu I and Iðu II. This legal matter highlights ongoing tensions between landowners and fishing right tenants in the region, which have been brewing for several years.
