Eleni Glykatzi – Arveler, a significant figure in Byzantine studies and a trailblazer for women in academic leadership, passed away at the age of 99. The Greek government, through the Ministries of National Economy, Finance, Interior, Education, and Culture, has made the decision for her funeral to be conducted at public expense. This reflects the recognition of her contributions to the field and her status as an esteemed scholar.

Her funeral is scheduled for Friday at 1:00 PM in the Metropolitan Church of Athens, where her body will first be made available for public viewing. Glykatzi – Arveler’s accomplishments include becoming the first female head of the History Department at Sorbonne University in France in 1967, paving the way for future generations of women in academia. Later, she also became the first female rector of the same institution, marking an important milestone in the history of higher education.
