The international under-18 tennis tournament has begun in Šiauliai
Young tennis players from 22 countries have gathered in Šiauliai for an international under-18 tournament, featuring top-ranked players.
This year's international under-18 tennis tournament in Šiauliai has attracted young tennis talents from 22 different countries, marking a significant event in the local sports calendar. Among the participants, the highest-ranked players are Czech Jakub Kusy (ITF-52) and Swiss Noelia Malta (ITF-71), which adds a competitive edge to the tournament. The boys' singles draw includes Lithuanian representatives such as Markas Griaziutinas Tverskoj, Dominykas Gruša, Arnas Viktoravičius, and Ugnė Remeikis, while the girls' singles will feature Vasarė Stanaitytė, Milė Cibulskytė, and Ugnė Opulskytė. Finals are scheduled for February 22nd, Sunday.
A notable aspect of this year's tournament is its dedication to honoring Zenonas Eimutis Sabalis, a prominent figure in Šiauliai's tennis community. This recognition is particularly meaningful as Sabalis was instrumental in establishing the closed tennis courts in Šiauliai back in 1992, which laid the foundation for the local tennis school that later evolved into the Šiauliai Tennis Academy. The central indoor court at the Šiauliai tennis facility has also been named after him, preserving his legacy in the sport.
The presence of international competitors not only enhances the profile of Šiauliai as a sporting destination but also inspires local athletes to strive for excellence. As young players compete at this level, they gain invaluable experience, and the tournament serves as a crucial stepping stone in their athletic careers. Furthermore, the event reflects the growth of tennis in Lithuania and the community's commitment to fostering young talent, setting the stage for future sporting events in the region.
