We don’t know if they are in the Czech Republic. Authorities want to better monitor Ukrainians receiving benefits

Czech authorities are seeking to enhance their scrutiny of Ukrainian refugees receiving social benefits due to emerging fraud cases highlighted by banks.

Czech law enforcement has been uncovering fraudulent activities surrounding social benefits intended for Ukrainian refugees. A senior official from the Ministry of Labor stated that key measures to ensure that the funds are directed appropriately have yet to be successfully implemented, with the police being highlighted as a central figure in this process. The issue of illegal benefit claims for Ukrainians has only recently surfaced, prompted by banks that have reported receiving unusually high amounts of money, raising suspicions.

Local banks began warning authorities about potential fraud when substantial sums began flowing into accounts related to Ukrainian refugees, with minister Aleš Juchelka affirming this during a recent television program. The fraudulent activities appear to have occurred in various forms, and the police have opted not to disclose many details to avoid giving additional information that could assist potential fraudsters. Reportedly, abuses were evident in humanitarian aid and housing contributions provided to households that accommodated refugees after the onset of the war in Ukraine.

For instance, in the autumn of the previous year, foreign police apprehended thirteen Ukrainians in the Vysočina region, who were allegedly exploiting these benefits. As scrutiny intensifies, the Ministry of Labor acknowledges the urgent need for better oversight to prevent misuse while balancing the support that genuinely needy refugee populations depend on during their displacement.
