This is a sign to leave the dog park immediately – Many owners think it’s just play

A behavior expert warns dog owners to leave the dog park if one dog is being chased and seems distressed, as this could escalate into a fight.

Animal behavior scientist and consultant Pauliina Laurila highlights the importance of recognizing warning signs in dog parks, particularly the cue to leave when one dog is being pursued in a way that suggests distress. Laurila notes that many owners mistakenly believe that chasing is merely play, but as excitement levels escalate, the likelihood of aggressive encounters also increases. This perception can lead to dangerous situations where even a minor collision between dogs can result in a full-blown altercation.

Laurila emphasizes that dogs are individuals with different temperaments, meaning that a calm dog may not be significantly affected by occasional heightened arousal. However, for more active or overly stimulated dogs, the chaotic energy of a dog park can lead to behavioral issues that persist even outside the park setting. Owners, she argues, often misinterpret their dogs' body language, assuming they are enjoying themselves without fully understanding when stress or anxiety sets in.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, Laurila advises owners to maintain awareness of their dogs' social interactions and body language. She stresses the need for owners to be willing to intervene when play becomes too intense, highlighting that constant vigilance can prevent potential disputes and ensure the well-being of all dogs involved in such environments.
