Greece climbs in the global ranking of fixed broadband speed – A leap of 24 positions in a year

Greece has improved its ranking in fixed broadband speed, climbing 24 places in one year due to telecommunications investments and initiatives.

Greece has made significant progress in enhancing its high-speed fixed networks, attributed to investments by telecommunications providers and the implementation of the Ultra-Fast Broadband (UFBB) project. This initiative, financed partly by the EU Structural Funds, aims to launch commercial services across various regions of the country by December 2025. The commitment to infrastructure investment reflects both private provider contributions and coordinated efforts by the Ministry of Digital Governance.

According to the Ookla global ranking from January 2026, Greece ranks 72nd with a median download speed of 92.79 Mbps. This marks a notable rise of 24 positions from January 2025, which includes an 18-position improvement within that year and an additional 6 places in January. The recent achievements highlight the ongoing 'investment rally' in broadband infrastructure, indicating a robust commitment to enhancing digital services nationwide.

Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou has emphasized the national significance of this project, aiming to provide ultra-high-speed internet access across Greece and to bridge the digital divide. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the country's digital infrastructure, which is crucial not just for individual user experiences but also for economic growth and competitiveness in the digital landscape.
