Video Game Featuring Norwegian Mass Murderer Removed from Popular Online Platform
A video game based on Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik's attack on the island of Utøya has been removed from the online gaming platform Roblox after complaints from a Norwegian organization.
A video game titled ‘Utøya! (norwegian back story)’ that depicted the tragic 2011 mass shooting committed by Anders Behring Breivik on the island of Utøya was recently removed from Roblox following significant backlash. The attack, which targeted a political youth camp, resulted in the deaths of 69 individuals and left a lasting scar on Norwegian society. Concerns over the appropriateness of a game based on such a traumatic event were raised prominently, culminating in its eventual removal.
The Norwegian organization Barnevakten, which advises children and adolescents on media and technology use, played a crucial role in the game's removal. Initially, Barnevakten attempted to report the game through Roblox's internal reporting system, but when no action was taken, they escalated their concerns directly with Roblox. Following this direct appeal, the game was removed within minutes, reflecting the platform's commitment to uphold community guidelines against content that is inappropriate or potentially offensive.
Kjellaug Tonheim Tønnesen, a leader at Barnevakten, expressed satisfaction with the response from Roblox, indicating that the company took the report seriously and acted swiftly. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of content moderation on online platforms, particularly regarding sensitive topics like mass violence, and raises questions about the responsibilities of gaming companies in managing their content effectively.
