The Taalintehtaan harbor has improved its practices, says the supervisor – Yle's MOT report revealed the harsh storage method of plastic waste
The Taalintehtaan harbor has taken corrective measures in its handling of plastic waste following a report that highlighted poor storage practices.
Taalintehtaan harbor in Kemiönsaari has reportedly improved its practices regarding the storage of plastic waste, as confirmed by Anu Onjukka, a senior inspector from the licensing and regulatory authority. Earlier reports by Yle's MOT highlighted concerns that plastic waste bales were improperly stored, with fears they might end up contaminating the Archipelago Sea and local beaches. The port operator, Seaport Logistics, is responsible for ensuring that the plastic waste bales are intact and do not release waste into the environment.
The MOT report initially conducted late last year indicated that while some of the bales appeared intact from the ocean view, aerial photography revealed several had been damaged. Following the alarming findings, Onjukka noted that there have been significant improvements since last autumn, with the harbor operator making concerted efforts to rectify their practices in response to the MOT report. Onjukka explained that the plastic wrapping of the waste bales has been repaired and smaller bales have been treated with a spray that binds and hardens the surface to prevent waste leakage.
These changes come after public concern was raised over the environmental implications of inadequate waste management at the harbor. The actions taken by Seaport Logistics underlines the importance of proper waste handling to prevent further pollution of marine environments and demonstrates a proactive approach in addressing past oversights in waste storage practices at the Taalintehtaan harbor.
