Climate Council: The EU is not prepared for climate change

The EU's scientific advisory council on climate change states that it is inadequately prepared for the impacts of climate change and needs to increase investments for better protection against climate-related disasters.

A recent report from the EU's scientific council on climate change highlights serious shortcomings in the bloc's preparedness for climate change. The council's chairman, Ottmar Edenhofer, emphasizes the urgent need for the EU to ramp up investments aiming at protecting its member states from the rising threat of severe weather events, including floods, wildfires, and extreme heatwaves. Despite the EU's ambitious climate goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the measures taken so far have proven insufficient to address the adaptability required to cope with the damages already being inflicted by climate change.

Edenhofer pointed out that there is a significant lack of coherence, coordination, and budgeting in the current climate strategy. He stated that weather-related calamities have already caused substantial losses across Europe, with extreme heat alone leading to tens of thousands of premature deaths in recent years. This situation underscores an immediate need for the EU to reevaluate its existing frameworks and enhance its efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

In addition to the risks posed to ecosystems, climate-related disasters are resulting in substantial economic damages, averaging around 45 billion euros annually. Such financial impacts further argue for urgent action and increased funding to better equip EU nations for the challenges posed by climate change, as the existing situation continues to deteriorate amid rising global temperatures and increased climatic volatility.
