Ukraine regains over 200 sq km in five days – AFP

Ukrainian forces have reclaimed 201 square kilometers of territory from Russian troops in just five days, marking a significant advance in their ongoing counteroffensive.

In a notable military achievement, Ukraine's defense forces have reclaimed 201 square kilometers of territory from Russian troops between February 11 and 15, 2023. This represents the most rapid territorial gain for Ukraine in over two and a half years and is a stark contrast to the gains made by Russian forces throughout December 2022. The collective advancements not only bolster Ukraine's defensive posture but also signify a turning tide on the battlefield after months of stalemate.

According to an analysis from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the extent of this territorial recapture underscores the effectiveness of Ukrainian operations in dismantling Russian advances, particularly in areas that were previously under heavy control. The advancements were primarily noted about 80 kilometers east of Zaporizhzhia, where Russian forces had previously been gaining ground. Furthermore, this rapid reconsolidation of territory is seen as a pivotal moment in Ukraine's broader military strategy which has been under significant pressure since the onset of Russia’s invasion.

The ISW report highlights that Ukraine’s successful counterattacks may have leveraged recent interruptions in Russian forces' access to technologies such as Starlink, resulting in communication breakdowns and command issues for the invading army. This strategic advantage, coupled with Ukrainian resilience, has enabled the country to reclaim significant swathes of land in a short timeframe, reigniting hope for further advancements that could reshape the battlefield landscape in favor of Ukraine's sovereignty.
