Iran will try to lure the US economically; prestige and ideology will play a decisive role

Iran is set to engage in practical negotiations with the US in Geneva, where it may offer to reduce uranium enrichment in a bid to lift sanctions.

Iran is entering the second round of negotiations with the United States in Geneva, aiming for a more substantive and detailed discourse compared to the initial exploratory talks held a week earlier. Reports indicate that Iran may propose a reduction of enriched uranium from 60% in a gesture of goodwill, seeking reciprocal easing of sanctions. However, this proposal does not meet the minimum demands set by the US team, which insists on a complete halt to enrichment activities within Iranian territory as a prerequisite for any agreement.

Moreover, the recent meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), suggests Iran’s willingness to resume oversight of its nuclear facilities after previously expelling most UN inspectors. This follow-up could indicate Iran’s readiness to comply with international monitoring to ensure compliance with nuclear agreements, which were last signed in 2025 but became nullified three months later by Tehran.

Additionally, a potential sign of the direction of these talks comes from statements made by Hamid Kanbari, an assistant to the Iranian foreign minister for economic affairs, who mentioned that Iran is ready to propose joint ventures. This indicates a pivot from purely ideological negotiations to pragmatic discussions focusing on economic incentives, likely recognizing that economic considerations could play a crucial role in reviving relations with the US following years of tension and sanctions.
