French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez began a two-day visit to Algeria aimed at revitalizing security cooperation, which has been strained due to ongoing diplomatic tensions. The visit follows an invited request from Algerian Interior Minister Saïd Sadi to Nunez several months ago, and although the visit was delayed, it signals a potential thaw in relations. Upon his arrival, Nunez was received by Sadi at Houari Boumediene International Airport before heading to the Algerian Ministry of the Interior for meetings.

High-level security officials from both countries participated in the discussions, indicating a seriousness towards restoring cooperative measures. Representatives included Celine Burton, the Director General of French Internal Security. However, notable by his absence was French Ambassador Stéphane Romatet, who has been managing French embassy affairs from Paris since leaving Algeria at the request of President Emmanuel Macron in April 2025. This absence underscores the delicate nature of the diplomatic relationship between the two nations, which continues to be influenced by historical grievances and contemporary political dynamics.

While no meeting with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is slated during the visit, the possibility remains that further interactions could occur to discuss broader issues that affect both countries. The upcoming discussions may encompass various regional security challenges, as both nations seek to collaborate more effectively in areas such as terrorism and organized crime, aiming for a strengthened partnership despite previous rifts.
