Global Big Tech Workers Being Laid Off Due to AI – January Job Cuts Ten Times Higher than Last Year
The rise of AI technologies is leading to significant layoffs among Big Tech workers, with January 2023 witnessing ten times more job cuts than the same period last year.
The advent of AI technologies, particularly with the emergence of ChatGPT, has catalyzed a wave of layoffs in major tech companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon. According to data from Layoffs.fyi, in January 2023, 27 tech firms globally cut 24,818 jobs, compared to just 2,537 layoffs from 32 companies in the same month last year. Major contributors to this trend include Amazon, Meta, Autodesk, Ericsson, and Pinterest, with Amazon alone accounting for 16,000 job cuts. This surge in layoffs marks a significant reversal from a recent trend in the tech industry, where job reductions appeared to be on a decline after peaking in 2023.
