NRS begins phased rollout of e-invoicing for businesses
The Nigeria Revenue Service has started the phased implementation of an electronic invoicing system to enhance tax administration and compliance among businesses.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has announced the commencement of a phased rollout of an electronic invoicing system known as the E-Invoicing & Electronic Fiscal System, designed to improve tax administration and encourage better compliance among businesses across the nation. This new initiative aims to promote transparency in financial transactions while enabling easier tax monitoring and management for both the government and businesses.
The roll-out, which began with large taxpayers on August 1, 2025, is structured by annual turnover thresholds to systematically include different categories of taxpayers. Initially, extensive consultations and pilot projects took place, starting in January 2025, to ensure the system met the needs of stakeholders. The official implementation was subsequently extended to November 2025 for large taxpayers, suggesting the NRS is prioritizing a careful and inclusive approach to the rollout.
Since its launch, the NRS has reported significant progress in the onboarding process, indicating that most large taxpayers have begun to engage with the new e-invoicing system. This advancement is seen as a crucial step towards modernizing Nigeriaβs tax system, potentially leading to increased revenue generation and fostering a culture of compliance among businesses, which could further enhance the overall economic landscape in the country.
