Tax Authority Illegally Demanded 101,597 Krone and Refers Citizen to Debt Collection Agency

Danish tax authority Skat has unlawfully demanded 101,597 kroner from a citizen and is referring them to the debt collection agency despite acknowledging a mistake in the demand.

In a recent revelation, Denmark's tax authority, Skat, unlawfully demanded a total of 101,597 kroner from a property owner in Gentofte, incorrectly charging them with an extra property tax and associated penalties. The director of the Valuation Agency admitted to this error last week, indicating that the charge was a regrettable mistake. However, this acknowledgment has not reached the tax collection division of Skat, which continues pursuing the payment rigorously.

The initial demand included an illegal charge of 88,059 kroner in property value tax, which was later compounded by punitive interest rates totaling 13,538 kroner. Despite the tax authority recognizing the error, the affected property owner was notified via the e-Boks digital mailbox that failure to pay the penalties and late fees by the imposed deadline would escalate the situation, potentially involving the Danish Debt Collection Agency.

This incident raises significant concerns regarding the processes and accountability within the Danish tax system. The mismatch between the acknowledgment of the error by the Valuation Agency and the actions taken by the tax collection division suggests systemic issues that need to be addressed to prevent such unlawful practices in the future, ensuring that citizens are not unjustly burdened with erroneous tax claims.
