Sabotage on the Østfold Line Again

Sabotage on the Østfold Line has occurred again, prompting authorities to take measures to ensure passenger safety as trains must now run at reduced speeds.

On the Østfold Line in Norway, another incident of sabotage has been reported, where large objects have been placed on the tracks, forcing trains to slow down for safety. This follows a particularly concerning event in early February when a train collided with a large component called a wheel axle near Råde station. Bane Nor, the railway operator, has filed a report with the police but is currently unaware of who is behind these acts of sabotage, which is the fifth incident of its kind.

In the past year, trains on this route have run into various objects including a TV and large stones, raising significant concerns about public safety and the potential for fatal accidents. Gunnhild Hernes Synnestvedt from Bane Nor expressed grave concerns about the risk of derailment due to these deliberate actions, which could lead to serious injuries or worse. As a preventive measure, the railway operator is urging the police to prioritize the investigation, highlighting the increasing frequency of these disruptions.

The police, on their end, are struggling to gather evidence to resolve these cases, as the previous incidents have remained unsolved, and they are now looking for DNA traces from the objects left on the tracks. They have noted a lack of information about suspects involved. This worrying trend of sabotage raises alarms about the safety of public transport and highlights the need for the authorities to act decisively and swiftly to ensure the safety and reliability of the railway system in Norway.
