The slaughter of several leading festivals at the Theatre Institute

Several prominent festivals in Poland have been denied funding from the Ministry of Culture, raising concerns about the future of theatrical arts.

In Poland, several significant theatrical festivals have been denied funding from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Notable events such as the International Festival Divine Comedy in Krakow, the International Festival Contact in Torun, and the Polish Festival of Directing Art 'Interpretations' in Katowice are among those not receiving a single zloty in subsidies. This decision has come as a surprise to many stakeholders in the arts community, who were expecting at least some financial support for these cultural events.

Additionally, the newly launched initiative by the Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Lodz, called New Narrations, has also not received any funding. This pilot edition was anticipated to pave the way for future performances at the theatre. The implications of these funding cuts point to a growing challenge in sustaining the theatrical landscape in Poland and may lead to a reconsideration of how these cultural events are organized and supported at a national level.

The public has been urged for more transparency regarding the decision-making process behind the funding allocations. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture, Piotr Jędrzejowski, stated that the composition of the funding committee will be made available once the grant allocation process is completed. It was reiterated that 85 percent of the funding is at the committee's discretion, while 15 percent is managed directly by the Minister of Culture, indicating a highly centralized control over cultural financing that may be affecting the diversity of supported artistic endeavors.
