VIDEO: Several dozen entrepreneurs have dishonestly exploited Ukrainian refugees from the war

Several entrepreneurs in Latvia are reportedly exploiting Ukrainian refugees by failing to honor employment agreements or providing proper support, according to a report by Latvijas Televīzija.

Latvijas Televīzija has reported that multiple entrepreneurs in Latvia have been taking advantage of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war. This information comes from the organization 'Drošā māja,' which has been providing assistance to these individuals in distress. The situation has been concerning enough that the State Labour Inspectorate has noted an increase in complaints from foreign nationals, including Ukrainians, regarding their employers not adhering to agreed-upon pay, failing to provide formal work contracts, and other forms of exploitation.

In light of these issues, the Latvian government has allocated 39.7 million euros to support Ukrainian civilians affected by the war as part of a plan set for implementation until 2026. This funding aims to help with housing and food provisions for the refugees, with support for accommodation available for up to 60 days and food support limited to 30 days at a daily allowance of five euros per person. This structured support highlights the government's recognition of the challenges faced by these displaced individuals while addressing their urgent needs.

At the same time, the law includes special provisions for particularly vulnerable groups among Ukrainian civilians, allowing for nine specific groups to access additional accommodation support. These measures indicate a growing awareness and responsiveness to the plight of the Ukrainian refugees, yet the exploitation reported suggests a gap between policy intentions and ground realities that requires vigilance and further action to protect these vulnerable populations from unscrupulous entrepreneurs.
