Firefighters find body during search for missing persons from shipwreck at the Meeting of Waters in Manaus

Firefighters in Manaus discovered a body while searching for seven missing persons from a recent boat wreck, but it has not yet been confirmed if it belongs to one of the missing passengers.

The Military Fire Department of Amazonas (CBMAM) reported on Monday, September 16, that a body was found during the ongoing search for seven individuals who went missing in a boat wreck at the Meeting of Waters in Manaus. The body has not been confirmed to be one of the seven missing passengers from the unfortunate incident. The vessel, named Lima de Abreu XV, operated by Lima de Abreu Navegações, sank on Friday, September 13, en route from Manaus to Nova Olinda do Norte, leading to the tragic loss of two lives—a child and a 22-year-old woman—with seven others still unaccounted for.

Rescue efforts have so far successfully recovered 71 individuals alive, as confirmed by the firefighters. The body discovered was located in the Amazon River and is being transported to the Fire Department's fluvial base at the port of Manaus. From there, it will be sent to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) for identification. The ongoing search operation is noted to be particularly complex due to the challenging conditions in the river and the scope of the incident.

As search teams from the Fire Department and the Brazilian Navy continue their efforts to locate the missing passengers, community support and solidarity are evident among those affected by the tragic event. The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding maritime safety regulations and the operational protocols of transport companies in the region, which may lead to discussions on improving safety measures for river travel in the future.
