To make it less scary: Sheinbaum announces changes to the earthquake alert on cell phones
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced changes to the earthquake alert system on cell phones, including reducing the volume and modifying the accompanying message following citizen feedback.
In a recent announcement, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico revealed plans to adjust the earthquake alert system utilized on mobile phones. This initiative, aimed at reducing public anxiety, will involve lowering the volume of the alerts and revising the text of the warning that previously contained the phrase 'Presidential Alert.' The decision comes after numerous reports from citizens and criticism voiced on social media regarding the current alert system's effectiveness and its impact on individuals' stress levels during seismic events.
During her morning press conference on February 16, 2023, Sheinbaum emphasized the necessity for a more straightforward message in the alerts to improve communication with the public. Despite the adjustments in communication strategy, Laura Velázquez, head of the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC), assured that the alert system continues to function normally and effectively, successfully warning citizens of seismic activity. The government aims to ensure that the message conveyed through the alerts is not only accurate but also less alarming for users, in light of the psychological impact that alerts can have during actual earthquakes.
However, it is important to note that these changes will not be implemented in time for the upcoming national earthquake drill scheduled for February 18 at 11:00 AM. This highlights an ongoing process of refining and enhancing the alert system to better meet the needs of the public while maintaining operational effectiveness during real earthquake occurrences.
