European Library in Milan, Boeri and Zucchi to be tried
Architects Stefano Boeri and Cino Zucchi face trial regarding alleged conflicts of interest in the international competition for the European Library of Information and Culture in Milan.
The construction of the European Library of Information and Culture (Beic) in Milan, located in the Porta Vittoria area, is under legal scrutiny as architects Stefano Boeri and Cino Zucchi have been ordered to face trial. They served as head and member of the committee that awarded the project, but are accused of failing to declare conflicts of interest that may have influenced their decision in favor of the winning team. This has raised serious ethical concerns regarding the integrity of the competition process.
The preliminary judge, Fabrizio Filice, has determined that the case is significant enough to warrant a trial, involving not only Boeri and Zucchi but also other professionals involved in the project. This €131 million investment aims to create a facility that would house 25 million books, making it a notable cultural investment for the city of Milan. The allegations include auction disruption and various forms of misconduct related to the awarding of the project.
The implications of this trial extend beyond the individuals involved, as it questions the accountability within public procurements and architectural competitions in Italy. Ensuring transparency and fairness in these processes is crucial, especially when they involve substantial public funds and significant cultural assets that could impact the city's cultural landscape for decades to come.
