Maracatu da Favela has cars looted and even Super Mario goes missing in AP

During the dispersal of the Maracatu da Favela event in Macapá, several cars were looted, and Super Mario figures went missing, although some have since been recovered.

The Maracatu da Favela event experienced significant theft during the dispersal phase at the Sambódromo de Macapá in the early hours of Saturday, where vehicles were vandalized and four Super Mario dolls, part of the school’s decorations, were stolen. Fortunately, three of the dolls were later recovered through social media mobilization, with local internet users pinpointing their locations. The theft of these decorations highlights a recurring issue faced by the festival organizers every year, according to Sandro Macapá, the school's director.

Sandro explained that the Super Mario dolls were integral to the school’s parade and their absence surprised everyone involved. The area where the decorations are stored post-parade is managed by the Liga Independente das Escolas de Samba do Amapá (Liesap), which Sandro noted is often prone to thefts during the festival festivities. The dolls were eventually found scattered in locations near the Sambódromo, including a nearby bridge area and a condominium, illustrating how the community came together to address this issue through online platforms.

While the return of the dolls is a relief, the incident raises a larger concern about the safety and security of festival property. Sandro’s comments reflect a troubling pattern of theft affecting many samba schools during this festive season, raising questions about the adequacy of protective measures taken to safeguard valuable materials after the parades conclude. The local officials and the Liesap will likely need to reassess security protocols to better protect these cultural assets in future celebrations.
