The President claims he has not received an invitation to the Peace Council yet: we cannot say we will not join in the future
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda stated that he has not received an official invitation to the upcoming Peace Council, while expressing support for efforts aimed at achieving sustainable peace and resolving humanitarian issues in Gaza.
During a press conference at the Presidential Office, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda addressed the current lack of an official invitation to the Peace Council, which is expected to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that Lithuania is committed to supporting efforts for a sustainable peace and addressing the severe humanitarian issues affecting the region. The President highlighted that while no formal invitation has been extended at present, Lithuania remains open to joining discussions in the future, depending on the specific mandate and issues being addressed by the Council.
President Nausėda pointed out the importance of understanding the scope and depth of the discussions planned for the Peace Council before making any commitments. He reiterated that the upcoming meeting would primarily focus on the Gaza crisis, suggesting that further developments and clarity on the agenda would influence Lithuania's potential involvement in later stages. This cautious approach demonstrates the country's intent to carefully evaluate international commitments and prioritize national interests.
Furthermore, Nausėda commented on the European Union's decision-making process regarding the Peace Council, noting that definitive actions will likely be taken once there is a clearer understanding of the topics to be discussed. He recognized that the participation of other individual countries in the Council is a matter of their domestic political considerations, indicating a respect for sovereign decision-making in international formats.
