Two prominent feminists leave the party in Kiruna
Two leading members of the Feminist party in Kiruna are defecting to the Social Democrats as the party faces dwindling representation and membership.
In Kiruna, two prominent figures from the Feminists party, formerly known as Feministiskt initiativ, have announced their departure to join the Social Democrats ahead of the upcoming elections. This move highlights the ongoing decline of the Feminists party, which has struggled to maintain a presence in Swedish politics and is now largely diminished, only remaining relevant in a few municipalities after recent elections. Currently, they hold two seats in the local council and are part of a coalition with the Social Democrats, the Left Party, and Samelistan.
The exit of Lisa Forsberg and Peter Alex marks a significant moment for the Feminists party, which has seen its support erode over the years. Peter Alex mentioned that after spearheading three election campaigns, he felt that collaborating within a larger party like the Social Democrats would provide better opportunities than continuing with a smaller organization like the Feminists. This sentiment reflects a broader concern among party insiders about the future viability of the Feminists, given their limited membership.
The party currently has around 20 members, and there are fears that more members might choose to leave in the wake of this announcement. As the Feminists struggle to navigate their diminishing political landscape, the shift of key figures like Forsberg and Alex may serve as a catalyst for further departures, potentially threatening the party's survival in the local political framework and amplifying calls for more strategic alliances in the future.
