With pressures from Trump and Putin, is Sweden joining the euro for protection?
Sweden, which has so far resisted joining the eurozone, is reconsidering its stance amid geopolitical pressures from Trump and Putin.
Sweden has consistently maintained its currency, the krona, and has refrained from joining the eurozone, even though it is a member of the European Union. However, rapid political shifts in the region are prompting a reevaluation of this position. As reported by Bloomberg, the notion of adopting the euro is becoming increasingly appealing to many Swedish politicians, who view it as a means to gain greater stability and protection against significant geopolitical changes, particularly in light of the current U.S. administration under President Donald Trump.
There is also a noticeable shift in public opinion in Sweden, with growing support for adopting the euro despite the divisions it continues to cause among the population. The political climate, combined with external pressures from global leaders, is influencing Swedish perceptions of the euro. Should Sweden decide to adopt the euro, it would likely bolster the common currency's value and increase confidence in it, considering Sweden's status as having the largest economy among Scandinavian countries, with a GDP of approximately $603 billion forecasted for 2024.
