Ratas: Turbulence in the European Parliament for Changing the Emissions System
Estonian MP Jüri Ratas highlights political pressure in the European Parliament to improve the emissions trading system to enhance the competitiveness of EU countries.
Jüri Ratas, a Member of the European Parliament from Estonia, has expressed that there is significant political pressure within the parliament to discuss reforms to the Emissions Trading System (ETS) aimed at boosting the competitiveness of EU countries. He warns that further delays are expected in the implementation of the revised ETS, often referred to as ETS2. This comes amid discussions on how to strengthen Europe's position globally and improve the efficiency of its economic policies.
During an informal European Council meeting, leaders focused on Europe’s competitiveness and how to address weaknesses that have been identified. Emphasis was placed on the need for maintaining free trade agreements, enhancing digital transformation, and reducing bureaucracy. However, Ratas notes that despite these discussions, feedback from major leaders of EU nations such as France and Germany indicates that there is a pervasive sense of urgency to enact meaningful change that goes beyond merely addressing bureaucratic hurdles.
Ratas pointed out a significant signal received from a recent meeting in Antwerp among industrial nations, underlining the necessity for a thorough review of environmental policies tied to the ETS mechanics. The call for reevaluating the emissions trading system not only reflects an understanding of market dynamics but also a recognition of the pressing challenges facing Europe, including the need for competitive sustainability in the industrial sector.
