Canada’s Sarault wins 1,000m short-track silver
Canada’s Courtney Sarault secured a silver medal in the women’s 1,000-meter short-track speedskating event at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
In a thrilling final at the Milan Cortina Olympics, Canada's Courtney Sarault claimed the silver medal in the women's 1,000-meter short-track speedskating event, clocking in at 1:28.523. Sarault's performance is remarkable as it marks her third medal of these Olympics following a silver in the mixed team relay and a bronze in the 500-meter event. She has joined an elite group of Canadian women who have medalled in this event, with only Nathalie Lambert in 1994 and Kim Boutin in 2018 having previously done so.
Sarault led the race for the initial six laps before the Netherlands' Xandra Velzeboer overtook her, finishing just fractions of a second ahead of Sarault to take gold. South Korea's Kim Gilli, who initially slipped behind Sarault, managed to regain second place, illustrating the competitive nature of the event where positions can change rapidly. With just two laps remaining, Sarault managed to reclaim her positioning by overtaking Gilli but ultimately fell short of challenging Velzeboer for the gold in the final moments.
Canada's short-track team continues to perform strongly at the Olympics, as evidenced by the men’s 5,000-meter relay team, comprised of William Dandjinou, Steven Dubois, Maxime Laoun, and Félix Roussel, who have also secured a place in Friday’s final. These performances highlight Canada’s growing prowess in short-track speedskating on the international stage, setting up an exciting conclusion to the Olympic events.
