The HVAC Installer: Here are the Mistakes That Cause Your Water Pipes to Burst in the Cold
An HVAC expert discusses how frozen water can cause pipes to burst and offers advice on prevention and repairs.
Water pipes are at risk of bursting when the water inside freezes and expands, leading to leaks when temperatures rise and the ice melts, warns HVAC installer Gustaf Lundquist. Homeowners may first notice a problem when no water flows from their taps, but they must ensure their pipes have not burst to avoid potential flooding. Lundquist emphasizes that particularly copper pipes in older homes are vulnerable due to their inability to expand, making it crucial to properly insulate pipes in cold areas.
To prevent cracked water pipes, Lundquist advises homeowners to insulate their pipes adequately, especially those located in areas prone to cold temperatures. He notes that there are specific regulations that companies must follow, including installing pipes on the correct side of insulation to ensure protection against freezing. Preventative measures are more effective than dealing with the aftermath of bursting pipes.
In the event of frozen pipes, Lundquist suggests the use of a specialized machine called "PÃ¥ng-janne" to thaw them, although this process is time-consuming and can be expensive. He highly recommends seeking professional help rather than attempting to remedy the situation independently, as improper handling can lead to more extensive damage and costly repairs.
