Injured loggerhead turtle is rescued and taken for treatment in Belém
An injured loggerhead turtle was rescued in Salinópolis, Brazil, and taken for treatment at a specialized center in Belém.
A loggerhead turtle, known scientifically as Caretta caretta, was rescued on the beach of Farol Velho in Salinópolis, northeastern Pará, Brazil, after being found in a weakened state by local residents. The incident took place on Sunday, October 15, and prompted an immediate response from the Pará State Public Security Air Group (Graesp), who coordinated the rescue operation alongside local environmental organizations. Residents from a nearby condominium alerted the Marine Turtle Nesting Monitoring Project after spotting the distressed animal on the beach.
Following an initial assessment on-site, the turtle was airlifted to the Wild Animals Rehabilitative Care Center (Cetras/Ufra) at the Federal Rural University of the Amazon in Belém. Here, it will receive specialized veterinary care to aid in its recovery. The operation was further supported by the Bicho D’água Institute and the State Institute for Forest Development and Biodiversity of Pará (Ideflor-Bio), highlighting a collaborative effort to ensure the well-being of wildlife in the region.
This rescue emphasizes the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation efforts and the need for quick response actions for injured marine animals. As loggerhead turtles are listed as vulnerable due to threats such as habitat loss and pollution, each rescue operation plays a critical role in their recovery process and overall preservation efforts within Brazil's marine ecosystems.
