Bad weather: 4 regions under 'Red Code' status on Tuesday

Four regions of Greece will be put under 'Red Code' status due to expected flooding risks and coastal floods resulting from strong winds.

On Tuesday, the Greek General Secretariat for Civil Protection has announced that four regions, namely Peloponnese, Western Greece, Ionian Islands, and Epirus, will be placed in a 'Red Code' alert due to the impending threat of flooding and coastal disturbances caused by severe winds. This preparation follows an Extreme Weather Bulletin issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) the day before, highlighting significant weather deterioration that could impact these areas.

In response to the weather warnings, local municipalities and regions are being urged to activate their Civil Protection Operational Coordination Bodies. These coordination efforts are critical for ensuring that necessary measures are promptly taken to protect residents and infrastructure from the expected weather conditions, which include heavy rainfall and potential storm surges.

The implementation of a 'Red Code' signifies a severe level of alert that demands immediate action to mitigate risks associated with natural disasters. With the regions involved being prone to severe weather events, the proactive stance taken by authorities is essential to minimize damage and ensure public safety during this adverse weather situation. Such measures underline the importance of preparedness in the face of climate variability and extreme weather events in Greece.
