The second edition of the Gioacchino Volpe Prize has been announced in L’Aquila, celebrating excellence in historical literature, with Tommaso Piffer awarded for his book on the Porzus massacre.

The Gioacchino Volpe Prize, an esteemed literary recognition sponsored by the municipality of L’Aquila, has returned for its second edition. Named after the prominent 20th-century historian from Paganica, the award ceremony takes place the day before his birthday and is part of the official program for L’Aquila Capital of Culture 2026. The judging panel, led by Gianni Letta and comprising notable figures such as Gaetano Quagliariello, Antonio Polito, and Bruno Vespa, has celebrated achievements in national historical scholarship at Palazzo Spaventa in the city.

In the "Gioacchino Volpe" category, which honors historical literature, the top prize was awarded to Tommaso Piffer for his work "Sangue sulla resistenza. Storia sull’eccidio di Porzus" (Blood on the Resistance. History of the Porzus massacre). This book explores one of the most intricate chapters of Italy's recent history, shedding light on the complexities involved. Piffer's work stands as a significant contribution to understanding this dark period in Italian history and its implications for contemporary society.

Additionally, other awards were given in various categories, including the "Panfilo Gentile" section, which honors political essays. This initiative not only recognizes literary excellence but also promotes cultural engagement within the context of L’Aquila's role as a cultural capital, further enhancing its reputation and significance in national discussions around history and literature.
