Cabinet Office looking into Labour Together report claims, says minister

The Cabinet Office is investigating claims made in a report regarding journalists investigating Labour Together, but will not launch a formal inquiry as tensions rise within the party.

The Cabinet Office, led by Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall, is currently looking into the details surrounding a controversial report that falsely incriminated journalists investigating Labour Together, a think tank closely linked to Labour leader Keir Starmer. Kendall clarified that, despite calls for a formal inquiry from Conservative counterparts and some Labour MPs, this investigation would not be formalized, as a regulatory body—the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA)—is already reviewing the situation.

In November 2023, a report published by the Sunday Times, alleged issues concerning the sourcing, funding, and origins related to Labour Together, prompting scrutiny from the Cabinet Office. This investigation is centered around a report produced by the PR consultancy Apco Worldwide, which has been tasked with understanding the broader implications of the original claims and the context within which they were made. The scrutiny is focused not only on the content of the report but also on its commissioning and the potential motivations behind it.

Josh Simons, who previously served as the director for Labour Together and is now a Labour MP, is at the center of this inquiry due to his involvement in commissioning the report that is being examined. This situation has led to increasing tensions within the Labour Party, as internal party members and external critics demand accountability for false claims made regarding journalists' roles and potential biases in reporting. As investigations continue, the implications could extend beyond party politics to raise questions about journalistic integrity and accountability within political affiliations in the UK.
