Horrific murder in the USA: the victim became another Ukrainian refugee

A Ukrainian refugee was tragically murdered in North Carolina, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, raising concerns about the safety of refugees in the area.

A disturbing incident has been reported in North Carolina, where a Ukrainian refugee was murdered in her home. Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Kaleb Hayden Fosno, unlawfully entered her residence while her younger siblings were present. The incident occurred around 7 AM when he allegedly forced one of the younger siblings to wake her before he shot her dead alongside her boyfriend, who was sleeping next to her. Following the incident, Fosno fled the scene but was later apprehended by authorities, facing charges of breaking and entering as well as two counts of murder.

The victim's brother, Mykhailo Tovmash, expressed his outrage and sorrow on social media, highlighting the sad irony that his sister had fled Ukraine in search of safety following the Russian invasion, only to be killed in the United States. Tovmash pointed out that this incident marks the second murder of a Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina within a year, the first being 23-year-old Iryna Zarucka, who was also killed under tragic circumstances in Charlotte in August 2025 as she fled from the war.

This series of violent incidents involving Ukrainian refugees raises pressing questions about their safety and integration within American society. As the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to drive individuals to seek refuge in other countries, the New American community and local authorities must come together to ensure the protection and wellbeing of these vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the need for both physical safety and social support as they rebuild their lives in a new land.
