The school student stood on the balcony for a long time, thought repeatedly, and then jumped off

A 16-year-old student in Karnataka died under suspicious circumstances after falling from a school building, reportedly having thought about jumping for a prolonged period.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday morning in Chitradurga district, Karnataka, where a 16-year-old SSLC student named Kotrej died after falling from a school's building. Witnesses report that he was standing by the balcony for a significant amount of time, appearing contemplative before he jumped off the rooftop. The distressing event was captured on CCTV located in the hostel premises, suggesting that this was a deliberate act rather than an accident.

Kotrej, who hailed from the village of Kariyannanhalli, was quickly taken to the hospital but was unfortunately declared dead upon arrival. The police have stated that the actual cause of death will only be determined following a post-mortem examination and further investigation into the matter. The troubling context of the student’s final moments raises serious concerns about his mental well-being and circumstances leading up to the jump, particularly as it has been revealed that he had previously reported alleged harassment to the school authorities regarding hostel wardens.

In a written complaint, Kotrej's father, Gurulingayya, claimed that his son had faced harassment from the wardens, Deepa and Nagaraj, and had reported these incidents to the school principal on February 15. This brings the issue of student safety and mental health in educational institutions into the spotlight, necessitating an urgent review of the environment within schools and hostels, especially regarding their approaches to addressing student grievances and mental health issues.
